Jeep Gladiator Winch & Recovery Guide
Winch sizing, synthetic vs steel line, mounting options for every factory bumper, and the recovery gear to carry in your Jeep Gladiator.
Quick Answer
Size your winch at about 1.5 times your Gladiator's loaded weight: a 9,500 lb winch covers a lightly built truck, and 10,000 to 12,000 lb suits trucks with armor and gear. If you have the factory plastic bumper, you don't need a new bumper to add a winch: a bolt-on winch plate that ties into the factory tow hook mounts does the job. Pair the winch with synthetic rope, rated shackles, a tree saver and traction boards.
Table of Contents
1. What You Need to Know First
A winch's rating is its pull on the first wrap of line around the drum. Every layer of line on the drum reduces the pull, and mud, inclines and a stuck truck all add resistance, which is why winches are sized well above the truck's weight. A common rule is at least 1.5 times the vehicle's loaded weight.
| 2024 Gladiator Trim | Curb Weight | GVWR | Winch at 1.5x GVWR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sport, Sport S, Willys, Texas Trail, High Tide, Nighthawk | 4,640 to 4,780 lb | 5,800 lb | 8,700 lb |
| Mojave, Mojave X | 4,982 lb | 6,140 lb | 9,200 lb |
| Rubicon, Rubicon X | 5,009 lb | 6,250 lb | 9,400 lb |
Armor, a winch, a bed rack and gear can easily add several hundred pounds, so most built Gladiators land in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb winch range.
2. Which Option Is Right for You?
The right setup depends on how and where you wheel your Gladiator.
3. Winch Size Comparison
| Winch Rating | Line Type | Fits Gladiator Build | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8,000 lb | Synthetic or steel | Too small for most | Light, compact | Below 1.5x even an empty Gladiator |
| 9,500 lb (e.g. Rough Country PRO9500S) | Synthetic | Stock to lightly built | Lighter, fits more bumpers | Little margin once the truck is loaded |
| 10,000 to 10,500 lb | Synthetic | Moderately built | Good balance of size and pull | Costs a bit more |
| 12,000 lb (e.g. Badland Apex 12k) | Synthetic | Heavily built or overland | Plenty of margin | Heavier and larger; check bumper fit |
| 15,000 lb and up | Synthetic or steel | Overkill for most | Maximum pull | Heavy, large, extra front weight |
4. How a Winch Works
A winch pulls with the most force on the first layer of line. Sizing, line choice, mounting and electrical capacity decide whether it gets you out safely.
Sizing
Use your truck's loaded weight, not its curb weight, and multiply by about 1.5. For a heavy pull, a snatch block doubles the line back to the truck and roughly doubles the pulling power while slowing the line.
Synthetic vs Steel
Synthetic rope is lighter, easier on the hands, floats, and stores much less energy if it breaks. Steel cable handles abrasion and heat better but is heavier and needs a line damper. Synthetic uses a hawse fairlead; steel uses a roller fairlead.
Mounting
How you mount a winch depends on your factory bumper. The plastic bumper needs a dedicated winch plate, such as the Rock Hard 4x4 plate that ties into the factory tow hook mounts. The factory steel bumper needs a separate winch plate. Most aftermarket winch bumpers have the plate built in; see our Bumper & Armor Guide.
Electrical
A winch draws a lot of current under load. Keep the engine running while winching, use the cables supplied with the winch, and give the battery a rest between long pulls.
Safe Use
Anchor only to rated points or a tree saver around a solid tree, keep people well clear of the line, use a line damper, and wear gloves. Never hook a shackle to a tie-down point or a hitch ball.
5. Supporting Parts You May Need
A winch is only as good as the gear that goes with it.
6. Fitment Considerations
- Plastic bumper trucks. A bolt-on plate like the Rock Hard RH-90205 adds a winch without replacing the bumper.
- Factory steel bumper. It's winch-ready but still needs a separate winch plate, and the fit is tight for larger winches.
- Big winches. 12,000 lb winches like the Badland Apex are long; confirm your bumper's winch tray fits before you buy.
- Hi-Lift mounts and rock sliders. The Go Rhino 701011T fender mount doesn't work with factory rock sliders.
7. Common Mistakes
- Undersizing the winch. Sizing to an empty truck leaves no margin once armor and gear go on.
- Pulling from the wrong points. Tie-down loops and hitch balls are not recovery points.
- Skipping the line damper. A damper on the line absorbs energy if something breaks.
- Using a Hi-Lift without practice. It's a powerful tool that needs a solid lift point and careful use.

10. Frequently Asked Questions
What size winch do I need for a Jeep Gladiator?
A common rule is a winch rated for at least 1.5 times your truck's loaded weight. With Gladiator GVWRs of 5,800 to 6,250 lb, that's about 8,700 to 9,400 lb, so a 9,500 lb winch covers a lightly built truck and 10,000 to 12,000 lb is the better choice for trucks with armor, racks and gear.
Can I mount a winch on the Gladiator's factory plastic bumper?
Yes, with a dedicated winch plate. The Rock Hard 4x4 winch plate for the factory plastic bumper ties into the factory tow hook mounts with no drilling, cutting or welding, and accepts winches from 8,000 lb up to a Warn Zeon.
Synthetic rope or steel cable for a Gladiator winch?
Synthetic rope is lighter, floats, and stores far less energy if it breaks, which makes it safer to use. Steel cable resists abrasion and heat better but is heavier and needs a line damper. Most Gladiator owners choose synthetic. Use a hawse fairlead with synthetic and a roller fairlead with steel.
Will the Harbor Freight Badland Apex 12,000 lb winch fit my Gladiator?
It fits the Rugged Ridge Arcus bumper and the factory steel bumper with an aftermarket winch plate. At 23.25 in long it's bigger than many 12,000 lb winches, so check your bumper's winch tray before buying. Our Bumper & Armor Guide covers which bumpers fit it.
Where do I mount a Hi-Lift jack on a Gladiator?
A fender or cowl mount like the Go Rhino 701011T holds a Hi-Lift on the outside of the truck using factory mounting points with no drilling. It does not work with factory rock sliders, so check what your truck has first.
What recovery gear should I carry in my Gladiator?
A basic kit is a winch or kinetic recovery rope, two rated shackles (soft or steel), a tree saver strap, gloves, and traction boards. For serious trails add a snatch block, a winch line damper and a Hi-Lift jack with a proper mount.
